A man’s life was successfully rescued yesterday afternoon, Monday, after he got into difficulty while swimming off the coast of Arona in the south of Tenerife.
The incident happened at around 12:45pm, when the Canary Islands’ emergency coordination centre (CECOES), received an alert about a swimmer in distress at Playa Las Ballenas in Las Galletas.
Two firefighters entered the water from rocks to help the man, who was already being supported by a beach lifeguard, but due to the choppy sea conditions it was too dangerous to evacuate him via the shoreline, so they remained afloat while awaiting maritime assistance.
Maritime Rescue dispatched the Salvamar Alpheratz rescue boat, which arrived at the scene and lifted the group onboard before transporting them safely to the port of Los Cristianos.
Medical staff from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) assessed the man at the port. He declined further treatment and refused transfer to hospital.
The incident serves as a reminder of the risks posed by changing sea conditions around Tenerife’s coastline, even for experienced swimmers.
