A 40-year-old man was taken to hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning after being rescued from a house fire in Fañabe village in the municipality of Adeje, in the south of Tenerife.

The fire allegedly broke out at approximately 2:00am in the kitchen of a home on Calle Isla de Tenerife, which is when the Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received an alert from a British resident and immediately dispatched the necessary resources to the scene.

27-year-old Bailey Harding was on his way home from work at a bar on Fañabe seafront when he spotted smoke coming out of the small gap in a window of an apartment in the building he lives in.

Subsequently, he opened the window wider, and two cats and a large amount poured out of the opening. Acting quickly, he entered the building and banged on the doors of the 12 apartments in the block to wake up the occupants before alerting the emergency services.

Firefighters were the first on the scene and entered the building to ensure no one was trapped in an apartment or suffering any injury. At this point, they had to break down the door of the 40-year-old man in the apartment that had caught fire, and found him semi-conscious due to smoke inhalation.

After rescuing him, they quickly got the fire under control and managed to extinguish it before ventilating the building so it was safe for residents to re-enter.

SUC medical staff treated the man at the scene for moderate smoke inhalation. He was stabilised and then transferred by ambulance to the Hospital del Sur, where he remains under observation.

The National Police filed the incident report and are carrying out the necessary investigation into the cause of the fire.

Thanks to Bailey’s quick thinking and the swift response of the emergency services, the fire was contained, and no further injuries were reported.
