The Guardia Civil has confirmed that the body of a man has been found in a ravine in the municipality of La Aldea de San Nicolás, in the west of Gran Canaria.
The man had been reported missing on Wednesday night after his family raised the alarm, prompting the activation of a search operation. According to regional broadcaster Televisión Canaria, his body was discovered at around 1.30pm on Thursday by a group of local residents.
Following the alert, a helicopter from the Canary Islands Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) was deployed and later confirmed the discovery of the body in the Pino Gordo ravine, within the municipal boundaries of La Aldea de San Nicolás.
Canarias7 reported that the deceased was around 50 years old and originally from the nearby municipality of Agaete. Early indications suggest he may have suffered an accident while canyoning, a popular adventure sport in the area.
Emergency services found the man fully equipped for canyoning, including a helmet, ropes, harness and specialist clothing. This has reinforced the initial theory that the death was accidental and occurred during the activity.
The mayor of La Aldea de San Nicolás, Pedro Suárez, told local media that residents had seen the man alive on Wednesday, when he appeared to be preparing for the descent.
At this stage, the exact cause of death has not been confirmed and remains under investigation.
