Man drowns off Canary coast: Emergency services unable to save him

A 70-year-old man died yesterday, Monday, after drowning in the area of Zoco del Negro at Arinaga Beach, off the coast of Agüimes, in Gran Canaria.

The tragic incident occurred at just after midday, which is when the 112 emergency call centre received an alert reporting that an elderly swimmer had been rescued from the sea showing signs of drowning.

Emergency services, including an ambulance, were immediately dispatched to the beach, and a doctor and a nurse from the Arinaga health centre were transported to the site by the Local Police.

Upon arrival, medical personnel found the man in cardiac arrest and started both basic and advanced resuscitation efforts. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, there was no response, and they could only confirm his death.

Firemen assisted in the operation, while the Local Police secured the scene, awaiting for the judicial authorities to give permission for the body to be removed for official identification and autopsy. An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This tragic event comes amid heightened concerns for beach safety in the Canary Islands, where swimming conditions can vary significantly due to strong currents and changing weather patterns.

Authorities continue to urge caution and adherence to safety guidelines when entering the water, especially when there are active weather warnings for coastal conditions.
