A 73-year-old man died yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) after being pulled from the water in cardiac arrest, caused by ingesting sea water, on the coast of Taliarte, in Gran Canaria, according to reports from the Canary Islands Emergency Services (112).

The incident occurred at around 5:30pm when fellow bathers spotted the man in difficulty and managed to bring him to shore.

They immediately began resuscitation attempts, assisted shortly afterwards by a beach lifeguard from the local rescue service.

When SUC paramedics arrived at the beach, they confirmed that the man was in cardiorespiratory arrest and continued advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

However, despite their efforts, they were unable to revive him, and his death was confirmed at the scene.

The National Police have taken charge of the corresponding investigation and formal procedures so the man can be officially identified and his cause of death certified by an autopsy.
