A 40-year-old man has been arrested in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria after allegedly stabbing his 78-year-old mother to death inside their shared home last night (Monday). The fatal attack happened at around 9.15 pm in a house located in Siete Puertas, between Tafira Alta and San Lorenzo.

Emergency services were alerted to reports of a violent assault inside the property and quickly dispatched units from the Canarian Emergency Service (SUC), Las Palmas Local Police, and the National Police.

When officers entered the home, they discovered the suspect with cuts to his hands, thought to have been sustained during the attack. His mother was found lifeless in one of the rooms with multiple stab wounds to her chest and abdomen. Despite efforts from paramedics, she could not be revived.

The man was immediately detained, and the National Police have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the killing.

This marks the 13th violent death so far this year in Gran Canaria, compared with just four in the whole of 2024, and the 24th across the Canary Islands in 2025.

In February, a man in La Aldea de San Nicolás was arrested after fatally stabbing the mother-in-law of the local mayor during a robbery.

The following month, a woman stabbed her neighbour in a bar in La Feria, while a man in Schamann killed his partner in the room they shared.

In April and May, several violent deaths were reported, including the discovery of a woman’s body on the Arucas coast after being killed in a bar in Arenales, the fatal shooting of a migrant at the airport, and two separate killings in Las Palmas and Arguineguín.

June proved to be the worst month for this kind of violence, with four separate murders, including a man killed by his granddaughter in Firgas, a gender-based killing in El Zardo, the daylight shooting of a man known as “El Conejero” in Telde, and the stabbing of a homeless man in Playa del Inglés.

More recently, in August, the Guardia Civil discovered the bound body of a man under a bridge in Silva, while days later, police found a burned body inside a van in Ojos de Garza, leading to another arrest.

Authorities say investigations remain ongoing in several of these cases.
