A lorry overturned on the GC-1 motorway yesterday morning (Friday), heading towards Las Palmas, causing significant traffic problems, including long delays.
The Canary Islands’ Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) dispatched the necessary resources to the scene of the accident, where firefighters found that the diesel tank of the lorry was leaking fuel over the road, so they proceeded to secure the vehicle.
Subsequently, the Guardia Civil closed the necessary lanes of the motorway and managed the traffic, while Cabildo Road Maintenance crews started the cleanup.
The incident led to heavy congestion and long delays so drivers were advised to take alternative routes until traffic conditions return to normal.
When spilt on asphalt, diesel creates an extremely slippery surface, making it difficult for drivers to keep control of the vehicles and brake effectively.
Diesel is also highly flammable and can ignite if exposed to heat or sparks. The firefighters' intervention contained the spill and prevented further hazards.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in the incident.
