Plans to ease traffic congestion in the south of Tenerife have taken a significant step forward after the Cabildo approved an expansion of the Los Cristianos interchange and the project for taking Avenida Chayofita underground.
The approved plans will now extend the underground section of Avenida Chayofita as far as Calle Pedregales, going beyond the originally planned endpoint at Avenida Juan Carlos I (TF-665).
Designed to tackle growing traffic pressure
Cabildo president Rosa Dávila described the scheme as “strategically important” for improving mobility in one of south Tenerife’s busiest areas.
Los Cristianos experiences extremely high traffic volumes due to the port, year-round tourism, and continued development linked to the El Mojón partial development plan.
According to official data, more than 6,000 vehicles pass through the Chayofita roundabout every hour.
What will change?
The updated project includes:
- Extension of the underground section to Calle Pedregales
- A new access point connecting to the El Mojón development area
- Expansion of two exit lanes linking to Avenida Juan Carlos I and Avenida Hermano Pedro (TF-655)
- Adaptation of all technical systems within the interchange, including telecommunications, drainage, security and fire safety infrastructure
The contract, originally awarded to Palerm & Tabares de Nava S.L.P. for €481,500, will now increase to €601,875. The modification will be carried out by the same contractor, with a five-month execution period.

Mobility councillor Eulalia García confirmed the changes were agreed following coordination with Ayuntamiento de Arona, the Canary Islands Government’s Directorate General for Road Infrastructure, as well as public transport operators Titsa and Metrotenerife.
With traffic in the south continuing to rise, the expansion of the Los Cristianos interchange is seen as a crucial step in future-proofing mobility in one of Tenerife’s most important tourist hubs.
