This weekend, Los Cristianos will become the epicentre of European footvolley as the international Spring Serfay tournament takes over the sandy shores of Tenerife.
For the next three days, the island will welcome the top eight male and female pairs from across Europe, with local talent also making a strong showing in this highly anticipated event.
Footvolley, a sport that merges football and volleyball, is played on a sandy court with a net. Players use only parts of their body allowed in football—feet, head, shoulders, and chest—to pass the ball over the net.
Originating on the beaches of Brazil in the 1960s, footvolley has grown in global appeal due to its fast-paced action, impressive athleticism, and beach lifestyle charm.
A Showcase of Talent and Local Pride
Yosy Silva, tournament organiser and competitor representing Spain, expressed her excitement about hosting such a prestigious event in the south of Tenerife.
“We are very proud to bring this championship here, with the support of the Arona council and companies like Spring Hotels,” Silva said. “For minority sports like ours, it’s crucial to keep growing. Being from Arona, it’s a pleasure to compete on home ground and give everything for the win.”
The event begins today, Friday, with 17 male and 9 female pairs vying for spots in the main competition, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday. The tournament promises to bring together some of the best talent in the European footvolley scene, ensuring thrilling matches for spectators.
Beyond Sport: A Boost for Tourism
Arona’s sports councillor, Luis Sierra, highlighted the dual benefits of hosting such events: “Bringing sports to our coastline is not just a great sporting opportunity but also a significant draw for tourism.” Meanwhile, Yaiza González, Product Director at Spring Hotels, emphasized the importance of corporate partnerships in elevating the islands' profile as a hub for high-level sports. “Attracting top-tier sports is one of our group’s commitments, and we’re proud to play a role in this event,” she said.
