Living your best life in the Canaries: A guide to digital services for expats

There was a time, and it really wasn't that long ago, when moving to the Canary Islands felt like a trade-off between endless sunshine and the basic conveniences of home. You basically swapped out reliable high-speed internet for a temperamental dongle, and your favourite brands for whatever the local hypermarket happened to have on the shelf that day.
But the tide has turned. The "mañana" culture is still alive and well, thankfully, but the digital infrastructure has finally caught up with the view. Whether you’re tucked away on a hillside in La Gomera or right in the mix in Las Palmas, that smartphone in your pocket has become the most essential bit of kit for settling in.
Banking Without the Headache
If you ask any long-term expat about the first time they tried to open a traditional Spanish bank account, you’ll probably see them wince at the memory. There’s the mountain of paperwork, those oddly specific "office hours" that always seem to wrap up just as you're getting there, and the mystery of monthly maintenance fees, it can be a total drain.
It’s no wonder so many of us have just ditched the old way for digital banking. Apps like Revolut and N26 are pretty much the gold standard for the island community now. They let you hold Euros without getting stung by the predatory exchange rates you find at high-street banks.
More to the point, they make splitting the bill for some tapas at a "guachinche" as easy as a quick tap on your screen. While you might still need a Spanish IBAN for the utility bills, for everything else, like getting your pension or a remote salary, these digital platforms offer a level of clarity that the old-school banks just can't compete with.
The Groceries Come to You
It’s one thing to stroll through a farmer's market for some fresh papas arrugadas, but it’s a whole different story when you’re lugging an eight litres of water and heavy bags up a steep Tenerife street in 28-degree heat.
The surge in online grocery shopping has been a massive win for anyone who isn't super mobile or those of us who just want to keep our Saturday mornings to ourselves. Most of the big chains have decent apps now, where you can actually snag a delivery slot that works. And it isn't just the giants, either. Local delivery startups have popped up all over the islands, linking people with organic farms and those speciality shops that stock the niche stuff you used to have to cram into your suitcase.
Staying Entertained and Connected
So, how do we spend the quiet hours when we aren't down at the beach? For a lot of expats, entertainment is where that old sense of "homesickness" used to creep in. We’ve got Netflix and Prime, of course, but sometimes you just miss the familiar hum of life back in the UK or Ireland.
It’s funny how it’s the little routines that people end up missing the most. We’ve noticed a lot of people talking about how much they miss their home lotteries, that specific bit of excitement you get with the UK Lotto or the Irish Lotto on a Wednesday night. It’s a quirky thing to miss, right? Even when you’re living in actual paradise, you still want a flutter on the draws you know best.
Luckily, sites like Lottoland have stepped in to bridge that gap. It's all perfectly legal to use here, so you can bet on those international draws right from your terrace while the sun goes down over the Atlantic. It’s just a nice way to keep a bit of home with you.
Is It Really That Easy?
Is this digital shift perfect? Well, not quite. You’ll still run into the occasional website asking for a digital certificate or a Cl@ve pin that feels like it was designed by a codebreaker. But the direction we're headed is obvious. Life in the Canaries isn't a compromise anymore. You get the microclimates, the sea air, and the volcanic views, all while keeping your life running with the same digital ease you’d have in London or Dublin.
Which digital service has made your life on the islands a bit smoother? Is there an app you’ve found that you simply couldn't do without? We'd love to hear from you.
