Knife-wielding man arrested after attack outside school in Gran Canaria

Parents and children were left terrified after a man armed with a knife allegedly attacked a woman and her young son outside a school in Vecindario, Gran Canaria.

The incident happened on Thursday morning in Vecindario. According to reports from Televisión Canaria, the suspect approached the woman in the street while carrying a knife and allegedly threatened to kill her.

The man was reportedly subject to an active restraining order at the time of the incident.

Child kicked and witness injured

During the confrontation, the suspect is said to have kicked the child and thrown a glass bottle at a passerby. A witness who attempted to intervene and defend the woman and her son suffered a head injury after being struck, reportedly sustaining a cut to the forehead.

The motive for the attack has not yet been confirmed.

Arrest and court appearance

Officers from the Guardia Civil quickly attended the scene and arrested the suspect. He has since appeared before the duty court in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

He is being investigated for allegedly breaching a protection order, as well as for assault and making serious threats.

The incident has caused shock in the local community, particularly as it unfolded at the school gates during the morning period when families were arriving.
