A Jet2 flight bound for Fuerteventura was forced to make an emergency landing today (Wednesday) after suffering a serious in-flight engine failure while cruising at altitude over southern Portugal.
The Boeing 737-800 had departed from London Stansted and was over Portuguese airspace when the incident occurred. The flight crew declared a full emergency by activating the 7700 transponder code and contacting air traffic control on the international emergency frequency.
Following the loss of an engine, the pilots immediately began a controlled descent and diverted the aircraft to Faro Airport in southern Portugal. As standard protocol in such situations, airport emergency services were fully deployed ahead of the aircraft’s arrival.
Despite the severity of the incident, the plane landed safely at Faro at approximately 10:50 am, and no injuries were reported. Passengers were able to disembark normally once the aircraft was secured on the ground.
Jet2 later confirmed that a standby plane was being flown to the Portuguese airport so passengers could continue their journey to Fuerteventura.
At this stage, no injuries have been reported, and there has been no official confirmation from Jet2 or the Portuguese authorities regarding the exact technical cause of the in-flight problem.
