A 46-year-old Italian man has been arrested in Tenerife after Guardia Civil officers stopped him during a random roadside check in the south of the island. Authorities later confirmed that he was wanted in Italy for alleged weapons trafficking and narcotics offences.
This is the second case involving a wanted Italian suspect on the island in the space of just a few days. Earlier this week, the National Police detained another Italian man who was being sought by the courts in his home country over an aggravated kidnapping case.
The latest arrest was made by Guardia Civil officers from the main station in Granadilla de Abona. The suspect, who has no known address in Spain, was subject to a European Arrest and Extradition Order issued by Italian authorities for several serious crimes linked to drug and weapons trafficking.
He was stopped at a checkpoint set up to verify people and vehicles in the municipality of Arico. After officers checked his identification details, they confirmed that an active international warrant was in place and immediately detained him.
The man was brought before the correct judicial authority, which ordered his immediate imprisonment while extradition proceedings to Italy get underway.
