Insurance broker arrested in south Tenerife for scamming €130,000 from 150 people
The Guardia Civil have arrested a 44-year-old man accused of carrying out a long-running insurance scam in the south of Tenerife. The suspect is alleged to have defrauded more than €130,000 from 156 clients while operating as a professional insurance broker from his office in the municipality of Arona.
According to investigators, the man’s method involved convincing clients that he was arranging legitimate insurance policies of various types. In reality, the contracts were completely fake.
Victims paid him the cost of the supposed policies, but instead of processing them legally, he allegedly diverted the money directly into his personal bank accounts.
The investigation began after the Guardia Civil received an initial complaint, leading them to examine almost 1,200 insurance policies and bank records, identifying potential victims and gathering the evidence required to establish a continuing offence of fraud.
So far, 46 formal complaints have been filed, although the Guardia Civil believes more affected individuals may come forward in the coming days and weeks.
The detainee has been handed over to the competent judicial authorities along with all compiled case documentation awaiting trial.
