Emergency services were forced to carry out a rescue operation on Mount Teide after a hiker was injured in a fall on ice-covered terrain, showing the dangers currently facing walkers in the national park.

Firefighters from the La Orotava station were called out yesterday (Tuesday) to the Montaña Blanca area after a hiker fell and was unable to continue due to their injuries. The rescue was complicated by the presence of snow and sheets of ice along the route, creating hazardous conditions on the mountain.

The injured person received initial treatment from Red Cross personnel before being evacuated from the area. Due to the difficult terrain, the operation focused on removing the hiker from the icy zone so their companions could transport them safely to the nearest health centre for further treatment.

Later that same afternoon, firefighters from the Guía de Isora station were called into action, this time while conducting a training exercise. They received a call at around 3:30 pm about a group of hikers who had become stranded near the Altavista Refuge and were unable to continue due to ice on the path.

Fire crews escorted the group to the cable car area to prevent a potential accident.

Emergency services have once again urged people to take extreme caution when out walking,  to check conditions in advance and avoid high-altitude routes when snow and ice are present.
