The discovery of human remains in an advanced state of decomposition on a building site this morning (Wednesday), has unsettled residents in Jinámar, Gran Canaria.

It was reported shortly after 9:30am, when construction workers carrying out excavation work on a vacant plot identified what appeared to be a buried skull. Further inspection confirmed it formed part of a human skeleton concealed beneath the ground at a site earmarked for development.

Work was immediately suspended and the relevant authorities were notified. Initial indications suggest the remains may have been at the location for a significant period, although this has yet to be confirmed.

Police investigation underway

Officers from the National Police attended the scene and secured the area to preserve potential evidence.

Forensic specialists have since taken charge of the investigation, conducting a detailed examination of the site. The remains were uncovered during routine excavation, exposing part of the skeletal structure.

The body has now been removed and transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Las Palmas. There, forensic experts will carry out DNA testing and osteological analysis in an effort to establish the identity of the deceased and determine the cause of death.

At this stage, the circumstances surrounding the case remain unclear. Authorities have not ruled out any lines of enquiry as investigations continue.
