An Asian supermarket in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has been exposed as a health hazard after Guardia Civil officers uncovered rotting fish, expired seafood, and thousands of unsafe food items being sold to unsuspecting customers.
The shop, on Calle Barcelona near the Central Market, claimed to specialise in frozen seafood and dry goods. Instead, inspectors found freezers stacked with decomposing fish, meat turning black with decay, and shelves lined with out-of-date sauces, biscuits, nuts, and canned food, much of it labelled only in Chinese, with no traceability.
This isn’t the first time the store has been caught. Just last year, officers confiscated another 6,000 expired and spoiled items, including beef and chicken that had been rotting since as far back as 2019. Despite being sanctioned, the shop carried on trading.
Thanks to fresh warnings from members of the public, Guardia Civil returned and found the same nightmare repeating itself: dangerous, expired food openly on sale, including exotic species like belt fish left to rot in freezers.
In total, more than 13,500 food products have now been seized from this single shop. Authorities say the business has repeatedly placed shoppers’ health in serious danger, risking food poisoning and severe illness. The case is once again in the hands of the Canary Islands Public Health Department, which is expected to take tougher action.
