Holidaymaker dies after falling from hotel balcony during fire
A 23-year-old Belgian man has died after falling from a hotel balcony during a late-night fire in Puerto de la Cruz, in the north of Tenerife. The emergency unfolded just before 9:00 pm last night (Wednesday) on Avenida de Venezuela, when flames broke out in one of the hotel rooms, leading to a full evacuation.
Firefighters, medical teams, and the National and Local Police rushed to the hotel as thick smoke filled part of the building. Guests were led to safety as crews battled to contain the flames.
During the evacuation, officers discovered the lifeless body of the young man, who had fallen from a balcony. Investigators later confirmed he was staying in the room where the fire began.
Detectives are working with the theory that the man may have deliberately started the fire before falling from the balcony.
The flames were swiftly brought under control by firefighters, and no other injuries were reported. Police continue to investigate the full circumstances of the incident.
