Historic birth of golden lion tamarins at Loro Parque strengthens conservation of the species

Loro Parque, in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, has celebrated a crucial milestone in the conservation of the golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia) with the birth of two offspring at its facilities.

This achievement not only marks significant progress in protecting this emblematic endangered species but also reinforces the zoo's commitment to biodiversity and breeding programmes under human care.

The infants, born in early March, are in excellent health and are being attentively cared for by their parents, a male from Heidelberg Zoo and a female from Copenhagen Zoo. These tamarins, which arrived at Loro Parque’s Animal Embassy ten years ago, now play a crucial role in preserving the species.

Wolfgang Kiessling, president and founder of Loro Parque, emphasised the importance of this birth, saying, “The successful reproduction of the golden lion tamarin in our facilities demonstrates that Loro Parque provides an optimal environment for breeding endangered species. We are proud to be part of a global effort in which zoos worldwide collaborate to secure the future of this unique species.”

This birth is part of a coordinated breeding programme involving various zoological institutions and conservation organisations, ensuring the genetic diversity of the golden lion tamarin and contributing to future reintroduction projects in its natural habitat in Brazil’s Atlantic forests.

Since their birth, the infants have shown normal development, remaining clung to their mother’s fur, a typical behaviour for the species during its early weeks. With their distinctive golden fur and characteristic mane, the golden lion tamarin symbolises the fight against deforestation and the illegal wildlife trade.

The arrival of these tamarins offers hope for the survival of the species and serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts. Loro Parque remains dedicated to protecting biodiversity and animal welfare, establishing itself as a global leader in wildlife preservation.
