Heavy rain and wind force closure of Teide cable car

The heavy rain and strong winds sweeping across the summit of Tenerife have caused the Teide Cable Car to be closed this afternoon (Thursday), as the storm warning issued by AEMET for today, has already resulted in its first consequences.

Both the base station of the cable car and the upper station at La Rambleta on Teide, situated at a height of 3,555 metres, will remain closed until further notice.

The storm alert came into effect from 3:00pm this afternoon primarily impacting the Tenerife municipalities of Güímar, Arafo, Candelaria, and El Rosario, as well as the municipalities of Puntagorda and Tijarafe in La Palma, and already lots of people have shared images and videos on social media of the heavy rains in their area.

In San Eugenio (Costa Adeje), a video published on Twitter showed the flooded roads making it difficult for cars, and in Santiago del Teide, just over 30 litres of rain fell per square metre in less than half an hour.
