Group of youths attack two migrant teenagers in a park in Gran Canaria
A brutal attack by a gang of around twenty young people on two migrant teenagers has shocked the town of Telde, Gran Canaria. The assault erupted on Monday night in Arnao Park, where witnesses say stones and bottles were thrown during a chaotic street brawl that left one of the victims injured.
According to the National Police, the violence began at around 8:30 pm when two groups of youths clashed in the park. What started as a confrontation over an alleged insult towards a local girl quickly spiralled into a vicious chase through the streets. The attackers were said to be mostly local residents, who turned on two teenage migrants from the San Juan shelter, hurling bottles and rocks as they fled for safety.
The victims managed to escape and take refuge inside the shelter, but not before suffering blows and bruises. Residents described scenes of “total chaos,” with young people running, cars being hit, and bottles smashing against walls. One witness said, “It looked like a riot, there were kids everywhere and objects flying through the air.”
Police units rushed to the park and managed to break up the fight, but the attackers fled before they were caught. One of the migrant teenagers later filed a formal complaint at the local police station and was treated for minor injuries.
Investigators are now working to identify those responsible and confirm whether more people were involved in the attack. Officers are also looking into whether the assault was premeditated or fuelled by rising tensions between local youths and migrants in the area.
The National Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward as they continue their investigation, warning that further arrests are likely as more evidence comes to light.
