A group of bathers were dragged into the sea by powerful waves at the natural pools of Jover, in San Cristóbal de La Laguna in north Tenerife, yesterday (Thursday) after ignoring a red flag warning that clearly signalled dangerous conditions. The sea surged into the pool area, sweeping people and their belongings into the water within seconds.
The shocking moment was captured on video and quickly spread online, prompting anger from coastal safety campaigners who have repeatedly warned about the risks of ignoring flag warnings. Canarias 1.500 kilómetros de costa stated “More reckless behaviour despite a pre-alert for high waves and spring tides. Please, prevention is key.”
The Gobierno de Canarias had already issued a pre-alert for dangerous coastal conditions across the archipelago from Tuesday, 7th October until Thursday morning, warning of strong tides and powerful waves. The areas most at risk were off the coasts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, as well as exposed coastal zones of the larger islands.
Authorities have once again urged both residents and visitors to respect beach safety flags and stay away from dangerous areas when red flags are flying. These warnings are not optional. Ignoring them can turn a simple day out at the coast into a life-threatening situation and endanger not only those who take the risk but also the emergency teams who may have to rescue them.
