The British bakery chain Greggs is set to open its first international store in nearly 20 years at Tenerife South Airport later this month, giving UK holidaymakers a familiar taste of home before flying back from the Canary Islands.
The new outlet will open in the airport’s international departures area and is expected to serve millions of passengers travelling through Tenerife each year.
The Newcastle-based company said the airport was chosen as the ideal place to launch its overseas venture. The shop will offer a range of Greggs favourites, including sausage rolls, bakes, sandwiches and sweet treats.
The menu will also feature some products created especially for Tenerife, including a Spanish omelette breakfast roll and freshly squeezed orange juice prepared daily in-store.
Greggs chief executive, Roisin Currie, said the company believes its value-for-money food will appeal to travellers looking for a quick and affordable meal before their flight home. The new store will also include seating for up to 92 customers.
The bakery chain last operated internationally in Belgium in 2008 but has since focused on expanding across the UK. Greggs currently runs more than 2,700 shops and plans to continue growing despite rising costs linked to global energy prices and ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Tenerife South Airport handles around 13 million passengers every year, making it one of the busiest airports in Spain for British tourists. The arrival of Greggs is likely to prove popular with holidaymakers looking for a familiar snack before departure.
An official opening date has not yet been confirmed, but the store is expected to welcome customers before the end of May.
