The Port of Las Palmas has officially opened what is now the largest cruise terminal in Europe, a state-of-the-art facility designed to strengthen the Canary Islands’ role as one of the continent’s leading cruise destinations.

Located in the heart of Gran Canaria’s capital, the new terminal is expected to handle thousands of passengers every day, offering modern amenities and improved services for both visitors and cruise operators. Authorities say the facility will not only ease congestion during peak season but also provide passengers with a more comfortable and efficient arrival experience.

The inauguration is a major milestone for the city and the islands, which continue to see growing demand from international cruise companies. The Canary Islands have always been a vital stopover for ships crossing the Atlantic, and the new terminal will strengthen Las Palmas’ role as a major hub for both winter and year-round cruise routes.

Officials have also highlighted the economic impact the terminal is expected to bring, generating additional revenue for local businesses, shops, restaurants, and tour operators. Tourism leaders believe it will also help attract new cruise lines, further boosting the city’s global profile.

The terminal is now in use, with the Celebrity Apex becoming the first ship to dock and disembark 4,000 passengers yesterday (Thursday), although some finishing works are still ongoing. The Port Authority has confirmed that the facility will be fully open once all construction is complete, but for now, it is operational and welcoming cruise passengers into Gran Canaria.
