Five flights due to land at Tenerife North Airport were diverted to Tenerife South this morning (Wednesday) after poor visibility disrupted operations at Los Rodeos.
According to airport operator Aena, the affected aircraft were unable to land safely due to low visibility around the airport, which is known for weather-related disruptions under certain conditions.
Two of the diverted flights had travelled from Lanzarote, while another arrived from La Palma. The remaining flights were coming from Barcelona and Seville, affecting both inter-island services and mainland Spain connections.
Passengers experienced delays and disruption during the morning as aircraft were rerouted to Tenerife South Airport instead. Safety protocols require flights to divert when weather conditions prevent normal operations at Tenerife North.
Weather-related diversions are not uncommon at Tenerife North due to its location and surrounding terrain, which can lead to sudden fog and reduced visibility, particularly during early morning hours.
Travellers due to fly to or from Tenerife North today are advised to check the status of their flights with their airline before heading to the airport, as further delays or schedule changes remain possible.
