European fugitive arrested in the Canary Islands after two-year manhunt

The Guardia Civil have arrested a 78-year-old German in Gran Canaria who has been on the run from the authorities for two years for his involvement in a large-scale fraud scheme that netted over one million euros in late 2022.

The fugitive was being sought by the German authorities with an active European Warrant for his arrest, after he fled the country before he could be arrested.

The Territorial Judicial Police Team of Vecindario led the investigation, which ultimately identified the suspect after extensive surveillance, at a villa in Playa de Arinaga, Agüimes.

Once the Guardia Civil confirmed his residence and verified that the arrest warrant was still active, they proceeded to arrest him and take him into custody.

The suspect has now been brought before the Court of Instruction No. 1 in Telde, in coordination with the Central Court of Instruction No. 5 of the Audiencia Nacional in Madrid, who ordered his imprisonment pending extradition back to Germany to face trial.
