One of Europol’s most wanted fugitives has been arrested in Tenerife after reportedly living in the south of the island. Officers from the National Police detained the man, who is wanted by Hungarian authorities to serve an eight-year prison sentence for rape.
The suspect, named as Gyoergy Sandor Kunkli, was born in 1988 in Debrecen, Hungary. According to police records accessed by Spanish media, he had been classified by European authorities as “violent and possibly armed”.
International manhunt
Hungary had issued an active international arrest warrant for Kunkli, who was included on Europol’s Most Wanted list. His case was handled within the ENFAST network – the European system that coordinates specialist teams dedicated to tracing and capturing serious fugitives.
Being placed on the Most Wanted list means there was ongoing cooperation between multiple European police forces to locate him.
Despite being the subject of a Europe-wide search, the fugitive had reportedly been living a relatively low-profile life in a town in the south of Tenerife, where he managed to go largely unnoticed.
Considered highly dangerous
Police documentation indicates he was regarded as a “high-priority target” within a broader European operation and was categorised as highly dangerous.
Hungarian authorities were specifically seeking his arrest so he could be transferred to prison to serve an eight-year sentence for a rape committed in Hungary.
Sources confirm that the arrest took place recently in Tenerife, although further details about the police operation and the exact location where he was found have not yet been officially released.
European cooperation
The case highlights the reach of European law enforcement cooperation. The ENFAST network coordinates the pursuit of some of the continent’s most dangerous fugitives, particularly those considered violent or at risk of fleeing across borders.
The arrested man is now expected to face extradition proceedings so he can be returned to Hungary to serve his sentence.
