A Naviera Armas ferry travelling from La Gomera to the south of Tenerife was forced to make a diversion this morning, Wednesday, after suffering an engine failure during the crossing.
The ferry, Volcán de Teno, experienced a breakdown in one of its engines at around 7.15am while sailing between San Sebastián de La Gomera and Los Cristianos, according to the shipping company.
As a result of the incident, the ferry had to reduce speed and change its destination, diverting instead to the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where suitable technical facilities are available to carry out repairs.
Arrival delayed but no tow required
The mechanical problem caused delays to the scheduled arrival time. The ferry is expected to dock in Santa Cruz at around 2.30pm this afternoon.
Naviera Armas has confirmed that the ship is continuing under its own power and is not being towed, reassuring passengers that the situation is under control.
Passenger concerns over missed connections
Some passengers have expressed concern over missed medical appointments and onward travel. Speaking to Canary Islands Television, passenger Clara Izquierdo said the sudden change of port had caused significant disruption:
“We were told the ferry would dock in Santa Cruz instead of Los Cristianos. Many of us have medical appointments or connecting flights, and we’ve already missed them because we don’t know exactly when we’ll arrive.”
Road transport offered to Los Cristianos
To minimise disruption, Naviera Armas has offered passengers road transport from Santa Cruz to Los Cristianos once they disembark, allowing them to continue their journeys as planned.
There have been no reports of injuries, and the incident is being handled as a technical issue rather than an emergency.
