The Tenerife Cabildo has begun urgent stabilisation works on the hillside above the TF-82 in the La Vetita area of Santiago del Teide in west Tenerife, following growing concerns about slope instability and the increased risk of landslides after recent severe weather caused rockfalls.
Insular councillor Dámaso Arteaga Suárez confirmed that the deteriorated state of the slope, heavily affected by recent rainfall and adverse meteorological conditions, required immediate emergency intervention.
The operation centres on the controlled removal of loose rocks and soil, aiming to prevent additional material from detaching and falling onto the carriageway.
Rockfall Incident Prompted Additional Alarm
The decision to accelerate works was reinforced by a significant rockfall incident that occurred just a few weeks ago on the same stretch of road. In that case, a large section of rock broke away from the hillside and landed on two cars, forcing a temporary closure and prompting widespread concern among residents, commuters, and tourism‐related businesses that rely on the tf-82 as a key access route.
Although no injuries were reported, the episode highlighted the ongoing instability of the slope and underscored the need for a long-term solution rather than temporary clean-ups. Local authorities at the time warned that further incidents were likely if structural mitigation was not implemented swiftly, a prediction now echoed in the Cabildo’s emergency response.
Four-Week Closure Required
According to the Cabildo, the works are expected to last approximately four weeks. During this period, the TF-82 will remain fully closed to traffic, with diversions in place. Motorists are advised to plan additional travel time and follow official signage.
The Cabildo emphasises that while the closure is disruptive, ensuring safety is the priority: the combination of erosion, loose rock, and unstable terrain presents an ongoing hazard until the hillside is properly secured.
