El Puertito festival organisers have cancelled the firework display scheduled for this weekend. The decision was taken both as a sign of respect for the firefighters working on the forest fire in the north of the island and to avoid any need for them here in case of any accidents. The rest of the El Puertito festivities are continuing as planned.
The fiestas committee agreed on the decision with Adeje council this morning, stating that this was in support of the towns and villages that are directly affected by the fire.
It also means that no personnel from the Adeje fire brigade need be on hand and away from the important work in the forests. All fiestas must have firefighters on stand-by if fireworks are included in their celebrations.
“This is not the right time to have fireworks, nor the right time to take firefighters away from where they are needed”, said the committee.
The Adeje councillor for culture, Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, praised the decision of the El Puertito committee. “We are a municipality that is demonstrating solidarity with our northern neighbours, and what is important is that all available resources are fighting the fire".
