EasyJet announce new flights from Liverpool to the Canary Islands

EasyJet has announced new direct flights between Gran Canaria and Liverpool, which will operate during the winter season, further strengthening links between the Canary Islands and the UK market.

There will be two weekly flights, operating on Mondays and Fridays, both outbound and return. This new route expands the airline’s existing connections between the UK and Gran Canaria, which already include flights to Belfast, Bristol, Glasgow, London (Gatwick and Luton), Manchester, and Edinburgh.

Additionally, EasyJet has recently introduced routes from London Southend and Birmingham, reinforcing its commitment to serving the Canary Islands.

The addition of this new connection underlines EasyJet’s strategy to increase flight seats to high-demand holiday destinations. The airline currently holds a 25% market share in UK-to-Canaries flights during winter and 15% in summer, making the region a key part of its European network.

The Importance of British Tourism in Gran Canaria

EasyJet’s data highlights the significant impact of UK tourism on Gran Canaria. Between May and September 2024, the airline transported 64,747 British passengers to the island. This number increased during the winter season, reaching 71,392 travellers, a clear indication of the UK’s strong interest in winter sun destinations.

In 2024, Gran Canaria welcomed 1,056,707 British tourists, making the UK the island’s third-largest tourism market in terms of revenue. British visitors contributed a total of €1.24 billion to the local economy, with an average spending per trip of €1,415.

Local tourism officials have welcomed the new route, emphasising the importance of improved connectivity for the island’s tourism industry. Carlos Álamo, Gran Canaria’s Tourism Minister, stressed that air links are crucial for an island destination, and this latest addition will help consolidate the region’s record-breaking tourism growth.

“The ability to expand flight connections ensures that Gran Canaria remains an attractive destination for international visitors,” Álamo said. “Everything suggests that 2025 will be a year full of opportunities for the people of Gran Canaria.”

With its year-round sunshine, stunning landscapes, and well-established tourism infrastructure, Gran Canaria continues to strengthen its position as a top destination for British holidaymakers.
