Chaos broke out on a busy street in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on Sunday afternoon after a drunk driver ploughed into several parked motorbikes before attempting to flee the scene. The crash happened on Calle Luis Doreste Silva, where residents watched in shock as the car veered into a row of motorcycles lined up along the pavement.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud crash before seeing the driver speed away in an apparent bid to avoid being caught. The Local Police immediately launched a search and quickly tracked down the damaged vehicle on Calle León y Castillo, just a few streets away.
When officers confronted the driver, he tested positive for alcohol, confirming their suspicions that he had been driving under the influence.
Police said the man’s decision to flee only worsened the severity of the offence, adding that the outcome could have been far more serious had anyone been walking nearby at the time. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, though several of the motorbikes were left badly damaged.
In recent months, police across the Canary Islands have dealt with a worrying number of drunk driving cases. In one case, a driver was caught travelling the wrong way down a motorway while under the influence, prompting a high-speed chase in Gran Canaria.
In Tenerife, officers intercepted a motorist driving at more than 150 km/h with an expired licence and children in the car, who also tested positive for alcohol.
In Spain, driving under the influence can result in fines of up to €1,000, the loss of six driving licence points, community service, or even prison sentences of up to six months in the most serious cases.
