VIDEO: Drunk driver crashes Porsche into taxi in Gran Canaria
A man driving a large Porsche was involved in a dramatic crash on Sunday morning in the Puerto area of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria after ploughing into a taxi and then hitting street bollards.
The incident happened at around 10 am on Calle Juan Rejón, near its junction with Calle Princesa Guayarmina, a street in the busy port district close to Las Canteras Beach.
According to security camera footage from the café Churrería La Unión, located on the corner, the high-end SUV struck the rear of the taxi before mounting the pavement and colliding with bollards directly outside, startling customers enjoying their breakfast.
Witnesses say the taxi had stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross at a nearby zebra crossing when the Porsche, driven by a man later found to be over the legal alcohol limit, slammed into the back of it. The bollards absorbed much of the force of the second impact, preventing further damage to nearby trees and street furniture.
The crash caused damage to both vehicles; the rear of the taxi was badly dented, while the Porsche’s front end was extensively damaged. Police carried out a breathalyser test on the driver at the scene, which confirmed he was under the influence of alcohol.
