Delays and diversions at Tenerife South Airport are not due to the fire

The Tenerife South Airport experienced a morning of delays today (Friday), although the slowdown in operations is not due to smoke or the efforts to extinguish the fire that started yesterday in a composting plant in the municipality of Arona not far from the airport or the flight path.

As could be seen on Flightradar24's website, some flights to or from Tenerife experienced delays or were diverted to other airports at other islands.

Air Traffic Controllers confirmed that this was due to adverse weather conditions particularly the wind: "Due to the direction of the wind, the airport is operating with runway 25 instead of 07 as usual; with that runway, fewer planes can be operated per hour because it is a more complex and difficult process".

Delays continued well into the afternoon adding extra difficulty for the Tenerife South Airport, on the busiest and main changeover day of the week, Fridays, in the middle of the high season for the island.
