Decomposed body found on Las Palmas seafront
The National Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of a man’s body in an advanced state of decomposition on the Avenida Marítima near the Triana district of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria yesterday afternoon (Thursday).
According to La Provincia newspaper, the grim discovery was made around 5:30pm by an off-duty Guardia Civil officer, who was alerted by a strong smell coming from the tetrablocks (large concrete sea defences) that line the seafront while walking along the promenade.
When inspecting the area, the officer reportedly noticed traces of blood among the rocks and later found an abandoned passport nearby. Upon looking closer between the large blocks, he discovered the lifeless body of a man.
Police units quickly arrived at the scene and confirmed the presence of the body, which appeared to have been trapped among the rocks for several days. Officers from the Local Police assisted by closing the right-hand northbound lane of the GC-1 motorway to allow emergency teams to operate quickly and safely.
Firefighters from Las Palmas were tasked with recovering the remains, which have been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences for a post-mortem examination.
According to reports, the body showed signs of violence, and no line of inquiry has been ruled out. The Homicide Unit of the National Police has taken charge of the investigation.
