The National Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of a decomposed body in a garden area of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on Tuesday afternoon.

The body was found in the upper part of Parque Doramas, between Calle Altavista and Paseo de Chil, near the site of the former nightclub El Cielo.

Due to the advanced state of decomposition, authorities have not yet been able to determine whether the deceased is male or female, nor whether there are signs of violence. A post-mortem will be carried out to establish the cause of death and identify the victim.

The discovery was made after a passer-by was alerted by the sound of a barking dog and a strong smell coming from what appeared to be a makeshift shelter, possibly used as a refuge, in a cave-like area on the hillside. Upon investigation, the onlooker spotted the body and immediately alerted emergency services.

Firefighters were called to assist with the recovery, as the body was located in a difficult-to-access area. Officers from the Scientific Police and the Homicide Unit also attended the scene, collected evidence, and have taken over the investigation.

The area is known to be frequented by homeless individuals who often sleep in the park, raising the possibility that the deceased may have been living rough.
