A man and woman are under investigation in Telde after six newborn puppies were allegedly abandoned in a plastic bag and thrown from a car onto a roadside in a rural part of the municipality.
The puppies were discovered on 14th April in the Ojos de Garza area after a local resident heard crying while walking his dog. When he approached the roadside, he found a black plastic bag containing the animals wrapped in blankets.
The man rescued the puppies and placed them in a cardboard box before contacting the local police. Officers later launched an investigation that led them to a 40-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, both residents of Telde.
According to police, CCTV footage and witness evidence indicated that a grey Renault Megane briefly stopped in the area before the bag was allegedly thrown from the driver’s window. The registered owner of the vehicle told officers it had been lent to one of the suspects.
The pair initially denied abandoning the animals and claimed they had tried to hand them over to an animal protection centre. However, staff at the centre reportedly told police that no such visit had taken place.
Investigators also discovered the puppies’ mother, along with two other abandoned dogs. Police say the behaviour of the mother dog and other evidence suggest the suspects may have previously cared for the animals.
All of the dogs were taken to the municipal shelter for veterinary treatment. Despite emergency care, two of the puppies died the same night, and another died several days later due to weakness and their poor condition.
Police said the puppies had been left in a sealed bag without ventilation, putting their lives at serious risk, especially given their young age and the weather conditions at the time. Officers believe the animals would not have survived without the intervention of the passer-by.
The case has now been passed to the court in Telde, where the suspects could face charges linked to animal abandonment and animal cruelty under Spanish law.
