A traffic accident occurred early this morning (Friday) after a rockfall on the GC-2 motorway in Gran Canaria. The incident took place in the northbound lane between the well-known El Atlante monument and the entrance to Aguas de Firgas, on the approach to Arucas.
According to 112 Canarias, the rocks fell onto the road just before 7.00 am, catching drivers off guard as they made their way along the busy morning route. One car hit the debris directly, causing a wheel to burst and detach from the vehicle, leaving it stranded on the road.
Several other vehicles had to stop as a result, and fragments of rock scattered across the carriageway forced other drivers to slow down and take extra care. The incident disrupted traffic heading towards Arucas during a time when the GC-2 is heavily used by commuters.
Emergency services and road maintenance crews cleared the rocks and removed the damaged car, ensuring the road was safe for traffic again.
Rockfalls are not uncommon on this stretch of the GC-2, particularly after periods of wind or unstable weather. In February this year, a rockfall caused long tailbacks near Bañaderos after several large boulders blocked a lane during the morning commute. Fortunately, no one was injured, but several vehicles suffered punctures and minor damage.
