Airports across the Canary Islands welcomed 4.7 million commercial passengers in August, representing a 5.2% increase compared to the same month last year, according to figures released on yesterday (Friday) by AENA.

Of the total, 2.19 million passengers travelled on domestic flights, up 6.1% year-on-year, while 2.52 million passengers were on international services, marking a 4.6% rise compared with August 2024.

The islands’ airports also handled 40,714 aircraft movements, i.e departures and arrivals, (+2.8%) and transported 2,618 tonnes of cargo (+3.7%).

Airport breakdown:

  • Gran Canaria: 1,294,008 passengers (+6.2%)
  • Tenerife South: 1,110,732 (+1.1%)
  • Lanzarote (César Manrique): 825,901 (+3.6%)
  • Tenerife North: 683,589 (+9.7%)
  • Fuerteventura: 628,755 (+10%)
  • La Palma: 138,846 (+0.5%)
  • El Hierro: 34,086 (-4.1%)
  • La Gomera: 14,283 (+9.2%)

Fuerteventura stood out with a double-digit increase, cementing its growing popularity among both tourists and residents during the busy summer season.

January to August totals

From January to August 2025, Canary Islands airports recorded 36.4 million passengers (in and out), a 5% increase compared with the same period in 2024.

This included 15 million domestic travellers (+5.3%) and 21.2 million international passengers (+5%). Over the same period, 321,755 aircraft movements were managed (+4.7%), while 21,283 tonnes of cargo were transported, representing a slight 1.8% decline.

National figures

Across the AENA network, which covers 46 airports and two heliports in Spain, plus London Luton Airport and 17 airports in Brazil, August closed with 38.99 million passengers, an overall rise of 4% year-on-year. In addition, 312,165 aircraft movements were handled (+0.9%) and 123,718 tonnes of freight transported (+6.3%).
