The National Police have arrested a man in the south of Tenerife accused of committing 13 burglaries in hotels and holiday apartments over the last five months, and two ‘violent’ robberies when he came face to face with people inside the accommodation he was robbing.
According to the official police press release the man is of Spanish nationality, a resident of Arona, and already has a criminal record for similar offences.
The police investigation started after several complaints from holidaymakers about robberies in tourist accommodations, where the burglar had climbed over walls and balconies to access hotel rooms and apartments targeting wallets, bags, and electrical devices, sometimes coming face to face with the tourists inside.
After his arrest, the man was ordered straight to provisional detention by the Investigating Court in Los Cristianos, where he will remain in custody until his trial.
Police advice to avoid being burgled:
The National Police have made various security recommendations for residents and tourists to prevent being burgled. Firstly, close all windows and doors when going out, including patio doors, and always double-lock the door behind you. If possible, keep your most valuable objects in a safe.
If you are a resident and are going on holiday, try and ask someone you trust to call by a couple of times a week, and try NOT to plaster social media with all your plans of going away!
If when you return you find the door of your home or holiday accommodation open, or think it has been tampered with, do not enter and immediately call the police without touching anything inside that could destroy possible evidence.
