The body of a 77-year-old woman was discovered floating in the sea near Pozo Izquierdo Beach, in the southeast of Gran Canaria, yesterday afternoon (Thursday), as reported by the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES).
Lifeguards stationed at the beach responded immediately after spotting the woman’s body floating face down in the water. They pulled her from the sea and commenced basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
The emergency call was received at the 1-1-2 call centre at approximately 5:20pm. The caller reported that a woman had been rescued from the water in Pozo Izquierdo and was in cardiac arrest.
CECOES dispatched all the relevant resources to the beach and paramedics took over with advanced resuscitation procedures to try and revive her, but despite their efforts, the woman was declared dead at the scene.
The Guardia Civil secured the area until judicial authorities arrived to oversee the situation and authorise her body to be taken for official identification and autopsy.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities gather information surrounding the incident.
