Boat with 43 migrants intercepted by Callao Salvaje in South Tenerife
A cayuco carrying 43 men of sub-Saharan origin arrived at the port of Los Cristianos yesterday afternoon (Thursday) after being intercepted just five kilometres off the southwest coast of Tenerife, near Callao Salvaje.
According to emergency services, all occupants were found to be in good health, and none appeared to be minors. The vessel was detected at around 5.00pm and was met by the Salvamar Alpheratz, which accompanied it to port for medical assessments and initial assistance.
This arrival comes as maritime authorities continue to handle a surge in migrant crossings along the Atlantic route, one of the most dangerous migration paths towards Europe.
Two Dead in Separate Cayuco Located After a Week at Sea
In a separate and far more serious incident, more information has been released about the cayuco found drifting after spending a week in Atlantic waters near Dakhla (Western Sahara), where two men died aboard.
It was spotted on Wednesday afternoon, approximately 275 kilometres southeast of El Hierro by the merchant ship Sara M, whose crew, along with another cargo vessel, the Eurostar, provided water and medication to those onboard until the arrival of the rescue ship Guardamar Urania.
According to Maritime Rescue, the occupants included 74 men, 20 women, and four children, all exposed to extremely poor sea conditions, with waves of two to three metres and winds reaching up to 65 kilometres per hour. One survivor had to be airlifted by helicopter to Hospital Doctor Negrín during the journey to Arguineguín.
The remaining survivors and the two deceased arrived at the port of Arguineguín shortly after 5.30pm, after nearly 18 hours of navigation.
At present, authorities have not confirmed the nationalities of those aboard or the location from which they departed, though survivors told medical teams they had been at sea for a week.
