Big demonstration planned in Tenerife against tourism projects this Saturday

More than thirty environmental groups, neighbourhood associations, and social organizations have called for a demonstration tomorrow (Saturday 22nd October), at 11:00am in Plaza Weyler in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, to demand "the recovery of nature in the Canary Islands" and show their rejection of projects such as Cuna del Alma in Costa Adeje and the new race track in Atogo.

Under the slogan “The Canary Islands are not for sale, they are loved and defended”, the organizers of this march expect a massive attendance by residents of Tenerife against these types of construction, to defend "a change in the industrial model, the tourism moratorium, and self-reliance on renewable energies", they said in a statement.

This demonstration is running alongside the one that has also been called at that same time in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria against the Chira-Soria construction project.

In addition, the groups assure that "the current laws are designed for speculation and are destroying the few natural spaces that we have left in the islands, which are necessary for the mental health of the population."

"We need a decrease in the sector and, failing that, apply regenerative policies to recover destroyed environments," they added, indicating that the date coincides with three months to the day since a group of young people camped on the Cuna del Alma project in Puertito de Adeje temporarily stopping the works.

Another of the projects opposed by the groups organizing the protest is the new race track, which they describe as "scandalous".

“Million dollar public investment to promote private motor leisure, amid an unprecedented crisis of fossil fuels and energy generation, while the management, conservation, and restoration or monitoring of natural habitats, of spaces and wild species, is totally insufficient and deficient due to lack of means”, they said.
