Los Guanches beach in Candelaria, Tenerife, has been temporarily closed after a high level of pollution was detected in the water.
The local council ordered the immediate closure as a safety precaution, cordoning off the area while water quality tests are carried out to determine whether it is safe for bathing.
According to Aqualia, the company responsible for water management in the municipality, initial investigations suggest the leak may be connected to construction debris recently found in the sewage network, although the source of the material remains unknown.
The problem was likely worsened by a build-up of solid waste, particularly wet wipes, which caused a blockage in the system and led to the discharge.
Samples are now being taken by the Health Department to analyse the state of the water. The beach will remain closed until authorities confirm that there is no health risk to swimmers.
The Candelaria Town Hall has once again urged residents and visitors not to flush wipes or other materials down the toilet, warning that such actions have both environmental and economic consequences. These items increase the cost of maintaining the sewage network and can cause incidents that impact public areas, including beaches.
