Arona considers ending use of bins for cooking oil collection after vandalism and misuse
The Arona Council is considering scrapping the collection of used cooking oil after repeated cases of vandalism and misuse of the recycling containers, according to officials from the Town Hall.
During Thursday’s plenary session, the council rejected a motion presented by the Socialist Group (PSOE), which had called for urgent action to address the “deterioration” of the service.
The motion, led by spokesperson Rosana Jiménez, proposed an immediate technical inspection of containers, corrective measures at problem points, and strict enforcement of the collection contract.
The PSOE argued that the service has “seriously deteriorated,” with dirty, broken, and foul-smelling containers in areas such as Los Cristianos, Costa del Silencio and El Fraile. Jiménez accused the council of failing to ensure timely and proper collection.
However, Clari Pérez, Councillor for the Environment, acknowledged the issues but blamed them on public misuse. “In some cases, residents kick the containers or pour in the wrong type of waste,” she said.
Pérez also revealed that between January and October 2025, only 20 litres of used vegetable oil had been collected across the entire municipality, according to the company responsible for the service, a figure attributed to damage and incorrect use of the containers.
The councillor emphasised the need for greater public awareness, stating that “behaviour will only change when people face real consequences.”
For now, the local government has decided to leave the future of the oil collection service to be reviewed under the next municipal cleaning contract, which is due to be renewed in 2027.
