Arona Council are introducing new overnight traffic restrictions in the Las Verónicas area of Playa de las Américas, in the south of Tenerife, banning both parking and vehicle access for ten hours every night.

The new rules will apply every day between 10:00pm and 8:00am along the road running parallel to Avenida Rafael Puig Lluvina, the main stretch through the popular nightlife area.

Emergency vehicles exempt

According to the council, the only exceptions will be for emergency vehicles and services specifically authorised by the local authority.

Officials say the measure follows months of monitoring traffic and pedestrian activity in, what is, one of the busiest nightlife hotspots in south Tenerife, particularly among tourists visiting Playa de las Américas.

Council cites safety and crowd control

Arona mayor Fátima Lemes said the decision was based on “management and safety” considerations.

She explained that removing vehicles from the area during peak nightlife hours would reduce congestion, improve access for emergency services and allow security operations to work more effectively.

Local Police councillor Héctor Reyes added that the changes are intended to improve police response in what he described as a “particularly sensitive” area during the night.

He said the restrictions would allow officers to operate in a more coordinated and efficient way due to the high concentration of people in the area.

Questions remain over parking alternatives

The council statement does not yet clarify whether additional parking areas will be provided for residents or workers affected by the overnight restrictions.

It has also not confirmed whether the changes will include CCTV cameras or further security measures, despite long-standing requests from local businesses for improved surveillance in Las Verónicas, who have now clubbed together to employ their own security teams to clean up the area.
