Applications are opening for 42 affordable rental homes in Playa Blanca

Applications for 42 public homes for affordable rent in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, are due to open on Monday, 26 October, following publication of the allocation procedure in the Canary Islands’ Official Gazette (BOC).

The homes are in the Montaña Roja development in Yaiza and will be let under the general public-housing scheme. Each has three bedrooms, around 90 square metres of usable floor space and a linked parking space. Two of them have been adapted for people with reduced mobility.

Applications can be submitted until 16th November 2026 through the Canary Islands Government’s online procedure. Applicants must be registered on the Canary Islands’ Public Register of Protected Housing Applicants by the end of the application period. Being on the register does not by itself guarantee a home.

The general requirements include at least 12 years’ uninterrupted residence in the Canary Islands, or 15 years if residence has been interrupted, and five years of continuous residence or work in Yaiza before the procedure was published. Exceptions to some residency rules apply in specific circumstances, including for victims of gender-based violence. Applicants must also meet the applicable housing-need, income and property requirements.

The 42 homes are divided among seven groups. Nineteen are in the general allocation; 11 are reserved for applicants aged up to 35 and four for people aged 65 or over. Other allocations cover people with mobility or communication limitations, victims of gender-based violence and returning emigrants.

Applications will be assessed using a points system that considers applicants’ social, economic, family and personal circumstances, as well as their need for housing. The size and accessibility of each home will also be matched to the household.

Successful applicants will sign rental contracts and must use the properties as their household’s permanent home. The allocation notice does not state a single rent for the homes; rents and related charges will be set under the rules for public protected housing and the individual tenancy contracts.

The homes were acquired through cooperation between the Canary Islands Government and Lanzarote’s Cabildo. After completion, ownership was transferred to the Canary Islands Housing Institute, which will manage and allocate them.
