Former volunteers from an animal shelter in Arico, Tenerife, have released disturbing video footage alleging serious welfare issues inside the facility. The images, shared with Televisión Canaria, show several dogs confined to small transport crates, which they claim is happening around the clock due to a lack of available kennels.

According to their statements, “because there aren’t enough cages, they start putting them in transport carriers. They spend the whole day, 24 hours, inside small crates.”

The volunteers also report that the animals are exposed to cold and damp conditions, with food bowls left uncleaned, dry food mixed with stones, and water containers in poor condition. They say the situation has already been reported to SEPRONA, the Guardia Civil’s environmental protection unit.

The shelter’s manager, however, insists the videos reflect a temporary problem caused by recent storms rather than standard practice. She maintains that staff are working with limited resources and that the footage was “planned” by someone with whom there is an ongoing personal conflict. She adds that water buckets are changed daily and that the team is doing its best under difficult circumstances.

The allegations have triggered strong reactions online and raised renewed concerns about animal welfare oversight on the island. Authorities are now assessing the complaint, and further action will depend on the results of the ongoing investigation.
