All access roads to Teide closed due to ice and pre-alert for snow

The Tenerife Cabildo has closed the access roads to the Teide National Park via La Esperanza (TF-24) and La Orotava (TF-21) to traffic this Sunday due to the presence of ice patches on the road.

Earlier this afternoon, the TF-38 (Chío) road from kilometre 13 and the TF-21 from kilometre 59 (Las Lajas recreational area in Vilaflor) were also closed, meaning now that all access roads have been shut.

In a statement, the Cabildo explained that, specifically, the TF-24 is closed between PK 24 (Los Loros) and PK 43 (El Portillo). Likewise, the TF-445 route, from Buenavista to the Faro de Teno lighthouse, is also closed as a preventive measure.

The Cabildo activated the Tenerife Island Emergency Plan (PEIN) from midnight last night due to the adverse weather conditions due to a DANA affecting the island.

In order to ensure people's safety, forest and hiking trails have been closed since 4:00pm on Saturday and traffic on the trails in the Teide National Park that provide access to the peak is prohibited.

The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, has reiterated the call to the population to avoid unnecessary travel, especially to the island's high-altitude areas, as well as outdoor activities.

Finally, the Minister for the Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, said that “the activation of the PEIN implies an express monitoring of the meteorological phenomenon, as well as the availability of the island's means and resources in case their intervention is required.”
