Adeje Town Hall cancels all San Sebastián festivities following Spanish railway accident
Adeje Town Hall has suspended all events for the celebration of San Sebastián, which were scheduled for today (Monday 19th January) and tomorrow (Tuesday 20th January), following the Spanish government’s decree of three days of national mourning following the devastating railway accident in Andalusia, where around fifty people have died, with many more injured and others still missing.
Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga announced the suspension after a meeting with the municipal government team and the Local Police. The decision effects both the eve of the feast and the main day of festivities, which typically attract thousands of people to the religious and popular events honouring San Sebastián.
Town Hall officials said the suspension was made out of respect for the victims, solidarity with their families, and support for the people of Andalusia, in line with the institution’s responsibility at times of collective grief.
Mayor Fraga stated that “in view of the scale of the tragedy, in solidarity with the victims and their families, and in compliance with the decree of official mourning, the Town Hall has suspended all scheduled events. This decision has been taken out of respect, institutional responsibility and a commitment to people, understanding that at times like this it is right to accompany collective grief and act with sensitivity.”
The suspension does not imply that the celebrations will be rescheduled later in the year, given the traditional and religious nature of the festivity. Adeje Town Hall has activated an information protocol to notify all parties involved, including registered participants with animals, riders, parrandas and musical groups, stallholders, and accredited media, ensuring that the suspension is communicated clearly and efficiently.
